India's Ahmedabad Officially Awarded 2030 Commonwealth Games Hosting Rights

Ahmedabad is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, as it was officially awarded the hosting rights during the General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport in Glasgow on Wednesday, 26th November. According to the Commonwealth Sport governing body, the city’s bid was ratified, making Ahmedabad the host of the centenary edition of the Games.

This will be only the second time that India is going to host the Commonwealth Games. India previously hosted it for the first time in 2010 in New Delhi. The 2030 edition holds more significance because of its 100-year celebration since the inaugural Games held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. This 100-year celebration marks a historic milestone for the Commonwealth sporting movement.

The road to this decision has been methodical. Earlier in 2025, the Indian Olympic Association gave its approval to submit the country’s bid, and the Union Cabinet approved Ahmedabad as the ideal venue, as it has “world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities and a passionate culture for sports”. Subsequently, the governing body’s Evaluation Committee reviewed submissions from candidate cities such as Ahmedabad and Abuja (Nigeria) on different parameters such as technical readiness, infrastructure, athlete experience, governance and alignment with Commonwealth values. Following this, the Executive Board recommended Ahmedabad ahead of Abuja.

Ahmedabad’s burgeoning sports infrastructure and prior experience make it a compelling choice. The city has already hosted recent international-level events that signal readiness. The bid presentation emphasised that venues, transport systems, accommodation and overall logistics are capable of matching a major multi-sport event that is in line with the new “Games Reset” vision of affordability, sustainability and inclusivity.

Hosting the centenary Commonwealth Games is more than a sporting event for India. It’s a statement of ambition, an opportunity to showcase national pride, foster youth participation in sports, build infrastructure, and position the country as a credible host of global events. For India’s interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, this could be a stepping stone, according to Indian sports analysts quoted in the Times of India.

Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is not just a big win for Indian sport; it opens the door for long-term narratives around infrastructure, youth, national identity, global ambition and social impact.
