Ahmed Shehzad criticized the Pakistan's team performance in T20I against New Zealand.
Senior Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has questioned the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the selection of all-rounder Shadab Khan for the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand.
In the series opener in Christchurch, New Zealand defeated Pakistan by nine wickets in the first T20I. Pakistan was bowled out for 91 in 18.4 overs, and New Zealand comfortably chased the target in 10.1 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Following the loss, Shehzad criticized Shadab Khan’s selection, questioning his performance and place in the team.
He said,"You're talking about Shadab, tell me, what performance has he delivered? Who brought him into the team? Let this series pass first. The PCB has a different plan with Shadab, and he was included in the team for a different purpose."
Shehzad also criticized the overall team performance, highlighting Pakistan’s heavy defeat.
Ahmed Shehzad further expressed concerns about the National Cricket Academy (NCA), questioning its role in developing new talent over the past four years.
He stated,"When we used to play, the NCA held big camps, and players were developed there. That place is supposed to be a nursery for talent, not just a setup where you adjust your own people and secure salaries. It was established to produce players. So where are those players now? How many have emerged?"
He further questioned,"What has happened to our NCA in the last four years? Who is running it? Where is the player development that used to take place for young talent?"
Ahmed Shehzad, a right-handed opening batter, was once compared to Virat Kohli due to his batting style. He became the first Pakistani batter to score a T20I century (vs Bangladesh, 2014) and played a key role in Pakistan’s 2009 U-19 World Cup-winning team. However, his career was affected by disciplinary issues and inconsistent form, leading to limited national team appearances after 2017. He has not played for Pakistan since 2019 but remains active in domestic cricket and T20 leagues.
