Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan honoured Jujhar Singh, the first Indian and the world’s first Sikh to win the ‘International Power Slap Championship’ held in Abu Dhabi.
Jujhar Singh, son of Sangat Singh and a resident of Sri Chamkaur Sahib in district Rupnagar, made history by defeating Russian heavyweight Anatolii Galushka.
According to a press release issued by the Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, the Speaker lauded the athlete for his “devotion and dedication” towards the sport and for making Sikhs across the globe proud.
Further, Speaker Sandhwan wished him more success in the field and encouraged him to reach the “pinnacle in his game.”
The Speaker said that the Punjab government is committed to raising the standard of sports and ensuring the welfare of sportspersons.
He added that sports can be a “powerful tool” to curb drug abuse and urged the youth to take up sports and draw inspiration from athletes like Jujhar Singh.
“Our youth needs to adopt sports-driven approach to combat drug abuse,” Sandhwan added.
The Punjab government is continuously making efforts to engage the youth in sports to keep them away from the menace of drugs.
Meanwhile, the state police have been conducting raids at various locations daily under the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ initiative to completely eradicate the drug menace from the state through its three-pronged strategy of ‘Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP)’.
So far, a total of 35,065 drug smugglers have been arrested during the 247 consecutive days of the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign.
