Canadian Lawmaker Apologises for Calling NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh a 'Terrorist', latest news: A provincial lawmaker in Canada has issued an apology after calling Jagmeet Singh, the leader of Canada’s federal New Democratic Party (NDP), a “terrorist.”
Racquel Hilbert, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Saskatchewan's ruling party, apologized for the remark she made on March 25.
On Wednesday, she said, “During my budget response speech, I made an inappropriate comment regarding the Federal NDP leader,” she said, adding, “I wish to apologise and withdraw my comment.”
She had criticised of the opposition party for not condemning their own federal leader, Jagmeet Singh, for being allegedly labeled a terrorist by India, and for not speaking out against the negative impact on trade in Western Canada caused by tensions with India.
Racquel Hilbert, an MLA said, “We did not hear the opposition denounce their federal leader as being a terrorist in India and denounce the collateral trade damage to Western Canada,” according to the agency Canadian Press.
On Wednesday, she said, “During my budget response speech, I made an inappropriate comment regarding the Federal NDP leader,” she said, adding, “I wish to apologise and withdraw my comment.”
Jagmeet Singh singh was reportedly denied visa by then UPA government back in 2013. There are no reports of any charge against the Canada’s federal New Democratic Party (NDP) leader in India.
In 2023, Saskatchewan accounted for 26% of Canada’s $5.1 billion exports to India, contributing over $1.3 billion—of which $700 million came from agri-food products.
