The heatwave continues to batter Pakistan. On Sunday, officials reported that at least 14 people were killed and over 100 injured in "devastating" windstorms that followed an intense heatwave in central and northern Pakistan.
On Saturday afternoon and evening, strong winds, thunder, and lightning struck the eastern Punjab and northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, including the capital Islamabad, uprooting trees and toppling electricity poles.
While most of the deaths were caused by collapsing walls and roofs, at least two people died after being caught in solar panels dislodged by strong gusts. One person was killed by a lightning strike, and three others were injured.
Mazhar Hussain, a spokesperson for the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority, told AFP that such windstorms are often triggered by extreme heat, which in recent days has soared past 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).
“In the past three to four days, the temperature rose significantly,” he said, announcing 14 deaths and over 100 injuries in Punjab. “This particular windstorm was especially devastating. The wind speed was very high, and there was so much dust that visibility dropped significantly.”
Pakistan’s Meteorological Department has predicted more storms on Sunday. On Saturday evening, social media was flooded with videos showing damage from the storm. One clip, filmed inside a landing plane in Lahore, showed passengers screaming in fear as the aircraft shook due to the storm. The plane was later diverted to Karachi.
