Under Trump’s executive order, birthright citizenship, is set to end after February 19.

Indian Couples in the US Opt for C-Sections to Beat Birthright Citizenship Deadline: Indian couples in the United States are making last-minute efforts to ensure their children are born before February 20, 2025, the deadline set by former President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship. The executive order stipulates that children born to non-citizen parents after this date will no longer automatically acquire U.S. citizenship.

A Race Against Time

The change has sparked a surge in requests for C-sections at maternity clinics, with several Indian-origin doctors reporting a flood of calls from expectant parents hoping to deliver their babies before the cutoff.

As per report, filed by India Today, a gynecologist based in New Jersey, revealed that his clinic has received numerous requests for early deliveries. “A seven-months pregnant woman came with her husband to schedule a preterm delivery,” he shared, noting that the woman was not due until March.

Similarly, an obstetrician in Texas, said he had spoken to around 20 couples in just two days. “I’m trying to explain to them the risks of preterm births, which include complications like underdeveloped lungs, feeding problems, low birth weight, and neurological issues,” he said.

The Deadline and Its Implications

Under Trump’s executive order, birthright citizenship—an automatic grant of citizenship to children born on U.S. soil—is set to end after February 19. This marks a significant shift for thousands of Indian workers on temporary visas like H-1B and L1, many of whom are waiting for Green Cards.

Children born before the deadline will retain their U.S. citizenship, a critical factor for many families hoping to secure their children’s future. Moreover, once these children turn 21, they could sponsor their parents for U.S. residency—a key motivator for many families.
