US President Signals At 'Second Phase' Of Sanctions On Countries Buying Oil From Russia Latest News; US President Donald Trump on Sunday signaled at moving to the ‘second phase’ of sanctions against the warring nations, India Today reported. The movie, which the report says could also hit countries like India that continue purchasing oil from Russia.
The statement reportedly came after Russia carried out its largest aerial assault on Ukraine in recent times. A key government complex in Kyiv was targeted in the strike.
Upon asking whether the US president was ready for a new round of sanctions on Russia and the countries buying oil from it, Donald Trump replied, ‘Yeah, I am,” without offering further details.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC that the US and the European Union could impose ‘secondary tariffs’ on nations buying oil from Russia.
The Treasury Secretary further stated that only the collapse of Russia’s economy would force President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.
Last month, Washington imposed an additional 25% panel tariff on Indian exports to the US, taking the total import duty to 50%.
However, India has maintained that the US measures were unfair.
Recently, Trump toned down his anti-India statements, saying he would always be ‘friends with Modi,’ and PM Modi quickly responded.
On Saturday, Trump said at the White House with a smile, "I will always be friends with (PM) Modi. He is a great Prime Minister. I will always be friends, but I just don't like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion."
"I get along very well with (Indian PM) Modi as you know, he was here a couple of months ago, we went to the Rose Garden," he added.

India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.@realDonaldTrump @POTUS https://t.co/4hLo9wBpeF
PM Modi quickly responded to the statement in a post on X, stating, “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”
This was the first time Prime Minister Modi responded directly to the US and their first interaction after the Modi and trump spoke over the phone on July 17 this year. In the phone call, Modi had clearly told the US president that the US had no role in brokering the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May.
