Maldives Suspends 3 Ministers Over "Derogatory" Remarks Against India's PM Narendra Modi

It all started with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep.

Maldives Suspended 3 Ministers Over "Derogatory" Remarks Against India's PM Narendra Modi Latest News: In a major development, the Maldivian government on Sunday suspended three of its ministers - Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan - for their 'derogatory' posts against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These posts allegedly sparked a massive firestorm with several Indians claiming to have canceled their scheduled trip to the island nation, prominently known for its pristine beaches.

In the meanwhile, the Maldives government issued a statement in which it stated that "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today issued a statement on the stand of the Government of India about some posts on social media that are insulting to neighboring India. Those who made such posts on social media while in government positions have now been suspended from their jobs."

However, the statement didn't reveal the names of those who were suspended. However, the local media reports suggested that the ministers who were suspended include the names of Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan.

What is the whole matter?

It all started when these ministers and some other leaders in the Maldives started posting derogatory remarks against India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he posted several photos and videos from his recent visit to Lakshadweep. PM Modi's posts, where he was seen snorkeling, went viral on social media. Several social media users suggested India's smallest Union Territory Lakshadweep as an alternate tourist destination to the Maldives.
