Indian-American Woman takes oath as 1st Justice of a District Court in the US state of Massachusetts

Tejal Mehta will serve as the first judge of the Ayer district court.

WASHINGTON: Indian-origin woman judge Tejal Mehta has taken oath as the first judge of the district court of the state of Massachusetts, USA. She will serve as the first judge of the Ayer district court. She was sworn in as  a judge last Thursday.

Mehta made headlines by promising to make a real impact on the Indian-American community and treat people with kindness. She has served as Assistant Judge of Ayer District Court. According to media reports, Mehta was unanimously elected as the first judge of the Ayer District Court. Chief Justice Stacey Fortes administered the oath of office on March 2.

"I am confident that with your leadership ... the best of the Ayer District Court is yet to come," Justice Mehta said. She added, “As a lawyer you can help people, but you can only help them to a certain extent. As a judge you can do a lot. You can get to the root of the issue. You can talk to people in a way that really reaches them."

Notably, Mehta's father was a chemist and his mother worked in a hospital. Mehta earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Notre Dame in 1997. He then completed his JD in the year 2000 from Boston University School of Law.
