Sangrur: A three-member team of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission today visited Dhandiwal village following allegations of social boycott of Dalit labourers by upper caste farmers over the rate of daily wages.

The Sangrur administration had claimed that both communities had struck a compromise on Friday, but the next day, an upper caste man stopped Dalit women from taking green fodder from his field, causing fresh tension in the village.

The team comprised commission’s senior vice-chairman Dr Raj Singh and members Tarsem Singh and Darshan Singh. It concluded that upper caste had announced the social boycott of Dalits from the village gurdwara, while the latter had also announced not to work below the rate of Rs300 per day with a meal.

Some Dalits have alleged that they had demanded a hike in their wages from Rs 250 to Rs 300 per day, but the farmers announced their social boycott.
