Nimrat Kaur: A young girl who has chosen to be Disk Jockey was chased by drunk men in the dark hours of night in quiet streets of our planned city beautiful, Chandgarh. This girl displayed courage and skill when she not only out manoeuvred the chasing car but also managed to call the police and got the offenders arrested. But today this story is rocking the nation, not because of this girls undefeatable spirit but because the offenders were politically connected.

One of the young boy was son of BJP Harayana Chief Subhah Barala. The case registered initially seems to have been watered down to allow the young men to get bail. The glory and reality of “ Beti Bachao” campaign is there for all to see.
On one side this case shows the strong face of young India where parents are supporting their daughters right to chase their dreams. This girl’s father is a Harayana cadre IAS officer who is standing by his daughter and is ready to fight the political might.
The other aspect of the case bares the dark side of Indian reality, where political might makes and breaks the law as per their convenience. Its not about BJP, its about the mentality of the political class and the powers granted to them. A similar case just happened in the Congress ruled Himachal Pradesh where the school girl, ‘Gudiya’ was brutally gang raped and murdered.
The real offenders are said to be politically connected and four scapegoats were arrested. One died a mysterious custodial death but these men came from poor families who cannot take on the political and the powerful.
When we have rapists and murdrers sitting in our parliament with the strength of the voter behind them, can we actually expect change? Is this country developing to be a country safe for women? Where women can dare to live free? Our society accepts such behaviour as the way of life. But this is not way we were meant to be. Police men were not to be the personal guards of our political leaders.
Our politicians are not above law. The Chief Minister of Haryana, M L Khattar said that why should father pay for his son's action? Absolutely, but can the father not interfere and let the son pay for his sins? There are voices emerging from the lower cadre of BJP criticisingthe girl for being out at night but they cannot see the wrong of a drunk man for stalking and chasing a girl with an intent to rape her?
BJP came with promises of clean governance. Can they live upto it?
