Chandigarh: The joint capital of Punjab and Haryana witnessed heavy rains for the first time since the southwest monsoon hit the union territory over a fortnight back. The city had witnessed scanty rains this month until yesterday and sultry weather conditions had prevailed.

The heavy downpour led to waterlogging at the traffic roundabouts and several roads of the city for sometime. Rains also lashed neighbouring towns including Mohali, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab, and Panchkula and Ambala in Haryana, MeT department officials said.

"For the past few weeks, everyone was perplexed why it was not raining in Chandigarh after the monsoon arrived here. It seems today's downpour will cover the deficit of the past couple of weeks," Anil Kumar, a city resident, said. PTI
