Demanding compensation, 500 farmers court arrest

Bathinda: Demanding that they be paid Rs 5,000 as compensation for not burning paddy stubble and officers should not harass them on the issue, over 500 farmers gathered outside the mini-secretariat in the city on Wednesday and courted symbolic arrest.

The farmers had gathered after Bhartiya Kissan Union (Sidhupur) gave a call for ‘Jail Bharo’ (Fill the jails) protest. Protesting farmers also demanded that union government should implement Swaminathan report suggestions and prices should be fixed based on this report. They also sought loan waiver.
