Punjab Weather Update: IMD Issues Red Alert, Very Heavy Rainfall In Next 36-48 hours: IMD has forecast widespread rainfall activity with Heavy to Very Heavy Rain at a few places during the next 36-48 hours over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

Red Alert: The India Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, has warned nine Eastern districts of the state of very heavy rainfall under a red alert. The nine districts under the red alerts are Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Nawanshahr, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur, Patiala, and Rupnagar.

Orange Alert: SAS Nagar, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Firozpur, Moga, Faridkot and Barnala have been warned of very heavy rainfall, however, under the orange alert.

Yellow Alert: The remaining four districts, Faizilka, Muktsar, Bathinda and Mansa have been warned of heavy rainfall under the yellow alert for today.

Punjab Weather Observed in the past 24 hours

Monsoon was strong over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during past 24 hours, according to IMD. Compared to yesterday, as reported by the state weather department at 8:30 am, today there is a drop in the average minimum temperature of -1.3 degrees Celsius and it is near normal in the state. Bathinda weather station recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 21.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, Bathinda recorded the highest rainfall in the state, also at 60.0 mm.

Punjab Weather Forecast For September 1, 2025:

Red alert remains in place for several northeastern districts with the warning of very heavy rainfall. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in the remaining districts of the state. The weather is likely to improve from September 3.

 Expected Impacts and Suggested Measures, as shared by IMD Chandigarh, are as follows:

Alert: HEAVY RAIN TO VERY HEAVY RAIN at a Few Places on 31st August 2025 to 1st September 2025 over parts of Punjab.

Expected Impacts

  • Rise in water level in seasonal streams, rivers and other water channels/ Flash flood Risk.
  • Damage to standing crops.
  • Damage to harvested crops lying in open.
  • Water logging in most low-lying areas.
  • Closure of underpasses.
  • Disruption of Municipal services (Water, Electricity etc)
  • Damage to weak structures
  • Traffic congestion due to water logging, slippery roads and low visibility may lead to increased travel time.
  • Flight/ Train Cancellations

Suggested Measures

  • Don’t keep harvested crop in open.
  • Make arrangements for drainage of excess water.
  • Be prepared to move away from flood-affected areas.
  • Avoid venturing into waterlogged areas.
  • Don’t stand near weak structures.
  • Avoid application of Fertilizers and Pesticides.
  • Drive carefully during rain.
  • Don’t go near water bodies
  • Avoid taking shelter in weak structures during thunderstorms.
  • Do not apply irrigation/ Chemical spray. Maintain proper drainage of the field and remove stagnant rainwater immediately

During a Thunderstorm event
• Take safe shelters; do not take shelter under trees.
• Farming operations may be suspended during the event.

Alert: HEAVY RAIN TO VERY HEAVY RAIN at isolated places on 31st August 2025 to 2nd September 2025 over parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
