Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, blooms with a flower that carries both beauty and legacy: the chrysanthemum variety named Punjab Gul-e-Sahir. It is officially released in 2025; this vibrant mustard-yellow blossom is a heartfelt tribute to the lyrical heritage of poet Sahir Ludhianvi, with its name meaning “Flower of Sahir”.

The development story of Gul-e-Sahir began in the 1990s under veteran scientist A. P. S. Gill, and through years of careful breeding, testing and refinement under PAU’s floriculture programme, the variety was finally approved and released this year.

What sets Gul-e-Sahir apart is its prolific bloom and decorative appeal. Each plant can yield up to eighty dense, double Korean-type blooms, with a lush canopy and tightly clustered flowers, a marked improvement over earlier varieties. According to PAU’s floriculture experts, this abundant flowering and robust growth make it especially suitable for landscaping, potted cultures, and gardens, as well as festive or decorative use.

Gul-e-Sahir begins flowering from mid-October and continues till November. It offers nearly a 40-day bloom period. This coincides with India’s festive season, making it perfect for weddings, home décor, garden displays or public parks.

According to an announcement by Punjab Agricultural University, the chrysanthemum’s grand debut will be at PAU’s 28th annual Chrysanthemum Show on December 2–3, 2025. PAU’s Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, along with its Estate Organisation, is going to organise this show. It will feature a competition and sale of many chrysanthemum varieties, including pots available at a modest rate for attracting gardeners, flower lovers and curious people.

For Punjab, a land rich in poetry, culture, and agrarian heritage, Gul-e-Sahir bridges science and sentiment. It is more than a flower: it’s a tribute to poetic legacy, a celebration of horticultural achievement, and a bright-petalled beauty for gardens, homes, and communities.
