War Against Drugs Continues in Punjab: Police sustain crackdown on smugglers
In a continued effort by the Punjab Government to eradicate the menace of drugs from the state, Punjab Police conducted raids at 306 locations on Sunday — the 232nd day of its ongoing campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (War Against Drugs).
The operation led to the arrest of 67 drug smugglers and the registration of 58 First Information Reports (FIRs) across the state.
According to the Information and Public Relations Department (IPRD), Punjab, with these arrests, the total number of drug smugglers apprehended so far has reached 33,500 in 232 days.
The raids were carried out as part of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s statewide campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh”, which aims to completely eliminate the drug problem from Punjab.
During the latest operation, the police recovered 561 grams of heroin, 1.1 kilograms of opium, 1,229 intoxicant tablets/capsules, and Rs 6,360 in drug money from the possession of the arrested smugglers.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has directed the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to intensify efforts to make Punjab a drug-free state. The state government has also constituted a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor the ongoing war against drugs.
According to the IPRD, over 100 police teams comprising more than 800 personnel and supervised by 57 gazetted officers carried out the 306 raids across the state. Police teams also checked 332 suspicious persons during the day-long operation.
The Punjab Government has adopted a three-pronged strategy, Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP), to eradicate drugs from the state. As part of the De-addiction initiative, Punjab Police today persuaded 23 individuals to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
