Government-farmer meeting is special for me: CM Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann reaffirmed that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the interests of farmers and work tirelessly for their welfare. Stressing that farmers are the backbone of Punjab, CM Mann reiterated that his government stands firmly with the farming community—not just during the sowing season but every single day.

Speaking broadly on the long-term vision for Punjab’s agriculture, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of transitioning towards sustainable practices, especially in light of depleting groundwater reserves. “The AAP government is not just talking about farmer issues—we are delivering real, ground-level solutions. From canal water revival to regulated sowing cycles, we are taking every step possible to make agriculture both sustainable and profitable,” Mann said.

He noted that Punjab, as the food bowl of India, has contributed significantly to the nation’s grain reserves. However, the traditional paddy-wheat cycle has come at a great environmental cost. “Producing one kilo of paddy takes around 4,000 litres of water. If we continue on this path without changes, we risk depriving future generations of water, the very source of life,” the Chief Minister warned.

To tackle this, Mann pointed to the state’s efforts to promote zone-wise paddy sowing—a measure aimed at conserving groundwater and streamlining harvest and procurement timelines. He added that Punjab has already begun witnessing positive signs, such as a rise in groundwater levels, following these corrective initiatives.

While discouraging the use of water-intensive paddy varieties like Pusa-44, the Chief Minister said the government is pushing for alternate crops and better market support for maize and Basmati rice. “Our objective is clear: to end the wheat-paddy trap and diversify agriculture. For that, we are ensuring better pricing, marketing infrastructure, and support systems for alternative crops,” he said.

The Chief Minister also assured farmers that there will be no black marketing of fertilizers like DAP and urea, and that power supply during the paddy season will remain uninterrupted. He highlighted that over 15,000 water channels have been revived across Punjab to ensure even the tail-end villages receive canal irrigation.

“This government is focused on real empowerment—not through hollow announcements but through policy changes that touch every field and every farmer,” Mann said, further calling upon farmers to actively participate in this shift and trust the government’s efforts.

CM Mann concluded by asserting that the AAP government is building a new narrative for Punjab’s agrarian economy—one rooted in sustainability, transparency, and self-reliance. “We are not here to manage a crisis; we are here to solve it, hand in hand with our farmers.”
