BBMB Releases Water From Pong & Bhakra Dams, Flood Alert Issued in Several Districts Latest News: The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) opening the floodgates on Tuesday has triggered fear among villagers and farmers in Punjab’s border areas.
According to a report by the Indian Express, about 45,000 cusecs of water were released into the Sutlej River on Tuesday, of which 38,000 cusecs were through turbines and another 7,000 cusecs via the spillway.
The report said that at 11 am on Tuesday, the water level in Bhakra touched 1,665 feet, crossing the safety limit of 1,650 feet.
The brim capacity of the Dam is 1,680.82 feet. Yesterday, as per the report, the inflow rose to 70,500 cusecs.
According to the Tribune report, the Senior Design Engineer, Water Regulation, BBMB Nangal, yesterday issued a schedule for the release from the Dam for yesterday.
According to the schedule, the floodgates of the dam were opened at 3 pm by one foot in the first phase, while in the second phase at 4 PM, the floodgates were scheduled to be opened by two feet, and in the third phase at 5 PM, the floodgates were scheduled to be opened up to three feet.
BBMB administration has directed officials to strictly follow the plan to ensure safety.
Additionally, due to the rising water level in the Pong Dam, BBMB has also announced the release of water from the dam starting 6 am on Wednesday, the Indian Express report said. The Pong Dam will release an extra 6000 cusecs of water into the Beas River due to increasing inflows.
According to the report, the water level in Pong Dam rose to 1,383 feet, with an inflow of 84,000 cusecs and discharge of 66,000 cusecs.
Flood alerts have been issued in Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, and Tarn Taran districts.
The report noted that around 30 villages in Ferozepur and Fazilka are already waterlogged.
Jaskirat Singh of Naroa Punjab Forum, an NGO working on river water issues, as cited in the report, said the issues were raised since earlier this month; however, the action appeared to have come only after the flood-like situation emerged.
“The danger mark for Bhakra is 1,650 feet, and it becomes uncontrollable beyond 1,675 feet. For Pong, the danger level is 1,390 feet, and beyond 1,410 feet, it cannot be managed,” Jaskirat Singh is quoted as saying in the report.
