Bhakra Dam Settles 5 feet below the Danger Mark

CHANDIGARH: As Rain continued to pour in Himachal Pradesh, several districts in Punjab remained under the threat of floods. Among the impacted areas, Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Gurdaspur found themselves grappling with flood-like situations, with Gurdaspur facing the most critical conditions. However, a sigh of relief swept through the region as a positive turn of events unfolded. The Deputy Commissioner of Gurdaspur reported that water levels had subsided at the Pong Dam, with only 80 thousand cusecs of water now being released. This marked a significant reduction from the previous outflow of 1.60 lakh cusecs.

In a parallel development, the Bhakra Dam witnessed a decline in water levels, settling 5 feet below the danger mark. Following the controlled release of water, the dam's water level had receded by 1 foot. Authorities have planned to continue releasing water from the Bhakra Dam over the next three days, maintaining a daily outflow of approximately 80 thousand cusecs.

According to the latest updates, the water level at the Bhakra Dam stands at 1675.18 cusecs. The inflow of water into the dam is measured at 47934 cusec, while an outflow of 72632 cusec is achieved through both turbines and flood gates. Notably, a relief arises from the fact that 46,900 cusecs of water are being released into the Sutlej river, thereby mitigating the flood risk. Currently, the water level at the Bhakra Dam is comfortably positioned 5 feet below the danger threshold.

In a recent instance, a rescue mission was successfully executed to save a 15-day-old infant and her mother from Gurdaspur's flood-stricken area. The army personnel swiftly relocated the mother and daughter to a secure location. In the ongoing phase-2 of the flood, a proactive effort led to the rescue of 5000 individuals, averting further crises. Regrettably, the situation has led to the loss of four lives thus far. As the water situation evolves, authorities remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the affected populations.
