Chandigarh: IMD Issues Orange Alert for Thunderstorms and Winds Up to 70 km/h, latest news:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert on Friday for thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, with the possibility of squalls. This comes as a strong Western Disturbance (WD) currently affects the region.
Winds are expected to drop to below 40 km/h after Friday, though the chances of rain will persist in the region until Sunday, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The alert was issued a day after the city recorded 8.3 mm of rainfall and winds reaching up to 50 km/h. The storm reportedly began around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
There have been reports of trees being uprooted in parts of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Zirakpur due to the strong winds. In Sector 49, winds damaged power lines at a petrol pump, resulting in a temporary disruption of fuel supply for about half an hour.
Speaking about the recent windy conditions, IMD Chandigarh Director Surender Paul told HT, “This is due to the strength of the Western Disturbance. While the system was stronger in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, being at the foothills of the Himalayas, was also affected.” He further explained that the recent rise in temperatures has intensified the Western Disturbance around this time of year.
Despite the stormy conditions, the maximum temperature remained steady at 37°C from Wednesday to Thursday, which is 1.7°C above the usual temperature. The minimum temperature, however, dropped from 24.5°C to 20.4°C. Over the next three days, the maximum temperature is expected to range between 35°C and 37°C, while the minimum will fluctuate between 21°C and 23°C.
