Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa Death Latest News Today: Renowned Sikh activist Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, known for his unwavering commitment to the release of captive Sikh prisoners, passed away at the age of 91. His demise marks the end of a remarkable life of sacrifice and struggle.
Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa began his hunger strike on January 16, 2015, at the age of 82, seeking justice for Sikh prisoners who remained incarcerated despite having served their sentences. His hunger strike lasted until January 14, 2023, making his movement one of the longest and most significant non-violent protests in Punjab’s history.
During his fast, Bapu Surat Singh was primarily confined to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, receiving sustenance through a nasal feeding tube, reminiscent of Irom Sharmila’s hunger strike in Manipur. Despite immense physical hardship, he remained steadfast in his mission to advocate for justice and ensure the release of captive Singhs.
The emotional appeal of Jagtar Singh Hawara, a fellow activist and political prisoner, prompted Bapu Surat Singh to end his fast on his 90th birthday in 2023. However, his fight inspired the continuation of efforts for justice, including the establishment of the "Insaaf Morcha" in Mohali on January 7, 2023.
Bapu Surat Singh’s life and struggle symbolize a relentless pursuit of justice, leaving an indelible mark on Punjab's history and inspiring generations to uphold human rights and fairness.
