CM Mann Lays Foundation Stone for Sewerage, Water Supply Projects in Sri Muktsar Sahib: Details
In a major infrastructure push for the historic town of Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann laid the foundation stone for sewerage and water supply projects worth Rs 138.82 crore.
Addressing a public gathering at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Mann said that Rs 90.68 crore will be spent on a new sewerage system and Rs 48.14 crore on water supply works, benefiting around 1.58 lakh residents across 31,000 households. He said that the projects would help ensure clean drinking water and improve drainage in the city.
The Chief Minister said that the projects were being undertaken after a gap of three decades. “It is unfortunate that despite producing Chief Ministers and cabinet ministers in the past, the city remained neglected,” Mann said, adding that he was grateful to have the opportunity to begin these works.
Mann said the existing sewerage system had outlived its life, causing frequent blockages, while several new colonies lacked proper services. The new projects, he added, would particularly benefit areas around Sri Darbar Sahib. Two new overhead water tanks will be constructed; one on Kotkapura Road and another on Abohar Road.
He announced that Rs 17 crore has been allocated for restoring roads and municipal streets affected during the works and directed officials to complete the projects on time.
During his address, Mann also criticized previous governments for neglecting development and alleged that traditional political parties had pushed Punjab into the drug crisis. He said that unlike earlier administrations, his government had launched the “War Against Drugs” campaign to eradicate the menace.
Taking a swipe at opposition leaders, Mann accused Congress and BJP leaders of supporting former Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is facing drug-related charges. He also alleged that Majithia had caused losses to the state through “corrupt solar power deals,” and said the state government was fighting a legal battle to cancel such “anti-people” contracts.
Continuing his attack, Mann referred to former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh as a “seasonal bird” who had “returned to politics after years of rest,” and accused the Patiala royal family of siding with “anti-Punjab forces” throughout history.
Highlighting his government’s achievements, the Chief Minister said that in three and a half years, the Aam Aadmi Party government had reopened closed canals, provided daytime electricity for farmers, offered free power to 90% of households, and given 56,856 youths government jobs transparently. He said the closure of 19 toll plazas had saved citizens Rs 64 lakh daily.
Mann said that 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics had been opened across Punjab to provide free healthcare, while the education sector had seen major reforms, including the establishment of 118 Schools of Eminence, a crucial step toward a bright future for underprivileged children.
He added that students were receiving free uniforms, bus services, and coaching for competitive exams like NEET, JEE, CLAT, and NIFT, with 265 students from Schools of Eminence and other government schools qualifying for for JEE Mains, 44 for JEE Advanced, and 848 for NEET.
Cabinet Ministers Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Dr. Baljit Kaur, local MLA Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar, and other dignitaries were present at the event, according to an official press release.
