The Punjab government has approved a major expansion of the state-run bus fleet with the addition of 1,279 new vehicles as a significant step to modernize public transit.

According to official reports, the expansion is strategically designed to improve last-mile connectivity and safety across the state’s urban and rural sectors.

The procurement includes a mix of ownership models, with 796 buses to be purchased directly and 483 inducted under the kilometre scheme.

The new fleet will be divided between the state's two primary transport bodies: 670 buses for the Punjab State Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) and 602 for PUNBUS.

A key highlight of the plan is the introduction of 100 midi-buses, which are specifically intended for intra-city and rural routes where larger buses are unsuitable.

To ensure passenger security, all new ordinary buses will comply with AIS-153 safety norms, featuring GPS, CCTV cameras, fire detection systems, and improved accessibility for persons with reduced mobility.

The expansion also includes 100 HVAC (AC) buses and high-end Volvo coaches to cater to long-distance commuters.

Officials stated that the phased induction of these buses is set to begin in March 2026. It is aimed at transforming Punjab’s public transport infrastructure into a safer and more reliable network.
