Punjab Weather Update: Red and Orange Alerts Issued, Relief Expected After June 15
Chandigarh, June 12, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh has issued red and orange alerts for Punjab and Chandigarh for the next three days, starting today. However, a slight relief from the ongoing heatwave is likely from June 15 onwards.
According to IMD, a red alert has been issued for five districts—Fazilka, Muktsar, Faridkot, Bathinda, and Mansa—on June 12, warning of a severe heatwave and warm nights. An orange alert remains in place for the rest of the districts in the state. These conditions are to persist through June 13 as well.
The public has been advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors during peak heat hours, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
On June 12, the average minimum temperature in Punjab rose by 1.1°C compared to June 11 and was 3.4°C above normal, according to IMD. The lowest minimum temperature, recorded at 8:30 AM, was 26.6°C in Bathinda.
On June 11, Amritsar and Bathinda (airport stations) recorded the highest maximum temperatures of 45.8°C each. Compared to June 10, there was a slight decrease of 0.6°C in the average maximum temperature. However, IMD reported that the average maximum temperature is still 5.4°C above normal across the state.
Meanwhile, residents in Mohali and Chandigarh faced power outages amid the extreme heat. The power supply reportedly went off around 11 PM yesterday and has not resumed as of the latest update.
