Court’s Verdict in Usma Case: AAP MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura Among Others Taken Into Custody News: In the case of molestation and assault against Harbinder Kaur Usma, a girl belonging to a Scheduled Caste family who had come to attend a wedding ceremony on March 4, 2013, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Tarn Taran, Prem Kumar, has convicted Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura as the main accused.
Orders have been issued to take him into police custody. However, official confirmation regarding the exact quantum of sentence is still awaited and will be pronounced on 12 September.
When Harbinder Kaur Usma, a resident of village Usma, reached a palace with her father, Kashmir Singh and other family members to attend a wedding, some taxi drivers allegedly molested her.
The victim, upon resisting, was assaulted by the taxi drivers. The police, who arrived at the spot, also reportedly brutally beat up the family in the middle of the road. As soon as the video reached the media, the incident sparked nationwide outrage. The Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance, had ordered security for the victim’s family.
Among the accused taxi drivers, Manjinder Singh Lalpura was elected as an Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Khadoor Sahib constituency in 2022.
During the hearing in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Prem Kumar, the defense lawyer appeared and appealed for leniency in sentencing. However, the court directed the police to take the accused into custody. Discussions suggest a sentence of four to five years, although official confirmation has not yet been received.
Along with the MLA, six others have also been held guilty by the court, according to a report by the Babushahi.
