J&K News, Omar Abdullah News, PSA against Doda AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Detention Latest News: Jammu and Kashmir’s only Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, was on Monday detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for allegedly disturbing public order in Doda district.
Reacting to the detention, J&K CM Omar Abdullah said that laws like PSA should not have been used against Mehraj Malik.
CM Omar Abdullah, speaking to the media, said, “Now, what has he done that makes him deserving of the Public Safety Act (PSA)? I don’t understand. Such a harsh law! What exactly did he do? Tell me. Were there any disturbances anywhere? Was there any stone pelting somewhere? Did the situation worsen anywhere? On the contrary, those people who actually disturbed the atmosphere here, those who played with our religious sentiments, those who created trouble at Hazratbal—nothing was done against them. Innocent people here are being harassed and are being summoned to police stations, interrogated. But those who toyed with our religious sentiments, no action is being taken against them.”
“If the MLA had made any mistake, it could have been corrected in the Assembly itself. Under the supervision of the Speaker, it could have been discussed. Such a law like PSA should not have been imposed against him,” CM Omar Abdullah added.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the MLA is the first sitting legislator in Jammu and Kashmir to have been detained under the PSA.
The PSA allows the administration to keep a person under preventive detention without trial if it is satisfied that his being free might disturb public order and peace, or threaten the security of the state.
The MLA from Doda, Mehraj Malik, has been sent to Bhaderwah jail, The Indian Express report said, citing officials, and he has been named in 18 FIRs and 16 daily diary reports at different police stations in Doda district.
The officials have alleged that the MLA increasingly caused disturbance to public order, especially when the district administration was busy with the relief of people affected by floods and landslides in the district.
Malik, according to the report, is even accused of attacking officials on duty. He allegedly locked officials inside their offices and abused and intimidated them in public.
Malik is also facing charges of abduction, the report added, citing officials. However, the imposition of PSA against the MLA will not affect his membership in the J&K Legislative Assembly, as he has not been convicted in any of the cases registered against him so far.
