Punjab Approves Digital Ticketing, GPS Tracking for State-Run Bus Services
The Punjab Government has approved the procurement of Digital Electronic Ticketing Machines (DETM) across state-run bus services to transform public transport, according to an official release.
The initiative aims to leverage technology to make everyday public services more efficient, transparent, and convenient for citizens.
With the introduction of DETM, commuters will be able to purchase tickets using multiple digital payment options, including QR code-based payments, UPI, and card-enabled transactions, along with offline modes.
The move is expected to reduce travel time, lessen dependence on cash, and ensure a smoother travel experience for passengers across both urban and rural routes.
Key features and facilities
The new ticketing system is designed with a strong focus on passenger convenience and journey planning.
The system will be GPS-enabled, allowing live tracking of buses, visibility of nearby bus stops, and real-time information on available services along various routes. It will also offer facilities such as checking seat availability and better journey management, making state-run bus services more reliable and commuter-friendly.
Free bus travel for women to continue
The release added that free bus travel for women will continue without interruption, in line with the government’s policy.
Further, women passengers will be issued smart cards to avail free travel seamlessly, reinforcing the government’s emphasis on dignity, safety, and ease of mobility for women.
Additionally, students will also be provided smart cards, which can be recharged online through a mobile application, making daily travel more accessible and affordable for young people.
The smart card ecosystem introduced under this initiative is expected to enable citizens and tourists to travel on Punjab Government-run buses with ease. Smart cards can be recharged digitally through a mobile app.
Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said, “By placing technology at the service of citizens, the Bhagwant Mann Government is reinforcing its broader vision of responsive, transparent and effective governance. The move towards smart ticketing infrastructure underlines the government’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient and technology-enabled mobility, while ensuring that public transport in Punjab remains inclusive, welfare-oriented and firmly centred on the needs of the people.”
