“Flood fury — poor visibility, waterlogged fields, fierce winds… nothing deters us. Evacuating casualties, delivering supplies, deploying troops, flying with hope — our wings follow the mission, not limits,” Vajra Corps of the Indian Army said in a post on X on September 6.

On the same day, Vajra Corps teams evacuated a 60-year-old snake-bite victim, gave first aid, and saved the person. The case was from flood-hit Gonewala, Amritsar District — Panther Division.

The sudden rise of Sutlej waters put embankments and homes at grave risk in Rukhnewala Kalan, Ferozepur, earlier last week, and the Vajra Corps soldiers, standing shoulder to shoulder with villagers, toiled day and night, reinforcing the banks and averting disaster.

On September 3, GOC Panther Division and column commanders briefed the Governor of Punjab & Administrator, Chandigarh, Gulab Chand Kataria, about the ongoing relief efforts. The Governor was visiting Ajnala and Gurdaspur to review flood-affected areas.

Gulab Chand Kataria commended the courage & compassion of the Indian Army for providing food & medical aid, and serving the motherland with devotion.

Punjab has been hit by the worst flood of the past nearly 40 years, inundating over 1,500 villages in various parts of the state as rivers flowing through Punjab swelled following incessant rainfall in the mountain states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Punjab itself also saw massive rainfall continuously for over two weeks.

The devastating flood severely affected daily life, many villages were disconnected as they were inundated, roads were washed away, and the whole of Punjab stood together in this tough time. Celebrities from Pollywood, Bollywood, and various associations came forward to contribute to the relief and rescue of the affected people.

There were significant livestock losses, and over 40 human lives were lost in the devastating flood.

Last week, the Union Minister for Agriculture was sent by the Centre to take stock of the flood. Two teams comprising officials from various departments were also sent along with the Minister to assess the situation, and they are set to submit a report to the Centre once the tour is done.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the state tomorrow, on September 9.
