
Major Push to Infrastructure: Harbhajan Singh ETO Reviews PWD Progress Across Punjab
Punjab Delivers Efficient, Cost-Saving Road Upgrades Under PMGSY Scheme
SAS Nagar: In a strong push towards strengthening rural and urban connectivity, Punjab Public Works Minister S. Harbhajan Singh reviewed the Public Works Department (PWD) projects, underscoring the state government’s commitment to modern, safe, and sustainable infrastructure.
The Minister was informed that bids have been invited for a majority of 378 groups under the Special Repair of Link Roads initiative, which will significantly improve last-mile connectivity for villages and towns. He directed officials to fast-track the remaining tenders to ensure early commencement and public convenience.
During the review, it was highlighted that under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), bids covering 286 km out of 581 km of link roads have already been floated. Notably, the department has successfully achieved 14.29% cost savings in the allotment of 325 km of upgraded roads, ensuring both quality execution and responsible use of state resources.
The Minister also assessed works under NABARD funding, where progress remains on schedule, with pending tenders set to be finalized by the end of July.
Addressing specific issues, Harbhajan Singh ETO directed the Special Secretary, PWD to prepare a detailed report with remedial measures for road slippages on the Sultanpur Lodhi–Kapurthala MDR stretch. He further instructed officials to ensure the optimum use of CRIF funding for critical infrastructure upgrades.
Taking note of the recent bridge collapse incident in Gujarat, the Minister directed engineers to carry out thorough structural safety audits of all bridges across Punjab, with certifications to be issued after due examination. He emphasized that public safety remains the government’s top priority alongside development.
Prominent officials present included Special Secretary PWD Ms. Hargunjit Kaur, Engineer-in-Chief Gagandeep Singh, Chief Engineers Anil Gupta, Ramtesh Bains, Rakesh Garg, Vijay Kumar Chopra, and several Superintending Engineers, who assured timely execution of ongoing projects.
Speaking after the review, Harbhajan Singh ETO said, “The Mann Government is committed to ensuring that Punjab’s road infrastructure not only meets the highest quality standards but also enhances connectivity for villages, towns, and cities alike. Our focus remains on timely delivery, transparency, and efficient use of resources.”
