Major Boost to Punjab's Tech Ecosystem: CDIL's Semiconductor Expansion Cleared Under India Semiconductor Mission
Historic Win for Punjab: Mohali Facility to Drive India’s Chip Manufacturing Growth
Chandigarh: In a landmark achievement for Punjab’s growing technology ecosystem, Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora announced that the Union Cabinet has approved four new projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with one major project set up in SAS Nagar (Mohali). The projects, collectively worth Rs 4,600 crore, include the expansion of Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL) – India’s pioneering silicon semiconductor manufacturer.
Expressing pride in Punjab’s inclusion, Arora said that the approval marks a historic moment for Mohali’s electronics cluster, which has long been known as the “Silicon Valley of North India.” He underlined that the decision reflects the State Government’s relentless efforts under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to attract high-tech investments that create jobs, boost innovation, and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
The CDIL facility in Mohali, operational since 1964, will now undergo a major brownfield expansion to diversify into Power Semiconductor Devices. The new lines will manufacture advanced technologies including high-power MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Bypass Diodes, and Silicon as well as Silicon Carbide transistors. Once operational, the facility will produce an additional 158.38 million units annually, raising its overall capacity to 750 million devices per year.
“These devices will power the future of electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, power conversion technologies, industrial equipment, and communication infrastructure,” Arora said, emphasizing the project’s role in making Punjab a hub for cutting-edge technology and clean energy solutions.
The Minister highlighted that the project will not only create new high-skilled jobs but will also strengthen collaboration between industry and research institutions, driving innovation and positioning Punjab as a leader in India’s semiconductor journey.
Calling the approval a “landmark win for Punjab’s semiconductor ecosystem,” Arora reiterated the government’s commitment to building a future-ready economy rooted in technology, sustainability, and innovation.
