Punjab Govt's Digital Crackdown on Drugs: Safe Punjab Portal Becomes Model for Citizen Policing
CM Bhagwant Mann’s Anti-Drug Mission Gains Momentum with 16,322 NDPS Cases and 25,552 Arrests
Chandigarh: In a landmark achievement in Punjab’s war against drugs, Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, who also heads the Yudh Nashian Virudh Cabinet Sub-Committee, announced that the Safe Punjab Portal has led to the registration of more than 5,000 FIRs within a year.
The portal, a WhatsApp-based chatbot (9779100200) launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann in August 2024, has emerged as a powerful tool for community-driven policing. By enabling citizens to share real-time intelligence about drug peddlers and hotspots, the portal has achieved a conversion rate of 32%, turning public tips into concrete police action.
Addressing the media at Punjab Bhawan, Cheema described the initiative as “one of the country’s most effective digital policing platforms.” He said the overwhelming response has transformed the portal into a potent weapon in the state’s flagship “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, launched on March 1, 2025.
Providing campaign updates, Cheema shared that since its launch, the Punjab Government has:
ï‚·Registered 16,322 cases under the NDPS Act
ï‚·Arrested 25,552 accused involved in drug trafficking
ï‚·Demolished 182 illegal properties belonging to smugglers
ï‚·Seized 1,054 kg heroin, 21,534 kg poppy husk, 366 kg opium, and over 3 million drug tablets and capsules
The Finance Minister also emphasized that unlike the previous regimes, which he alleged either patronized or ignored the drug trade, the AAP Government under CM Mann has shown uncompromising resolve to eliminate the menace. “From arresting publicly known drug kingpins to the recent capture of Joga Singh, our efforts have struck directly at the heart of the narcotics network,” Cheema stated.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, he added, “This campaign is not just about law enforcement—it is about safeguarding Punjab’s youth, saving our future generations, and restoring the state’s glory.”
Senior officials from the police and enforcement agencies were also present during the briefing.
