New trades developed to meet industry needs and driven by market demand

Punjab Government Unveils Skill Revolution with 50% Expansion in ITI Seats, 814 New Trades News: Chandigarh: Marking a historic leap in vocational training, the Punjab Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has announced a massive expansion in the state’s Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). With a sharp 50% rise in intake capacity and the launch of hundreds of new trades, the initiative is set to transform skill development and create unprecedented opportunities for Punjab’s youth.

Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains said that the number of ITI seats has surged dramatically, from 25,000 in 2023 to 35,000 last year, and now to 52,000, signalling a new era of growth in skill-based education. This expansion has been backed by the rollout of 814 new trades, carefully crafted to align with industry needs and emerging market trends.

Industry-Driven Skill Development

Bains explained that the newly introduced courses were finalised after extensive consultations with industry leaders, Industrial Management Committees (IMCs), and the Punjab Development Commission. The focus is on building a future-ready workforce, armed with modern skills in demand across sectors ranging from advanced manufacturing and information technology to renewable energy and services.

“These trades will empower our young people with cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on expertise, making them job-ready and capable of thriving in today’s highly competitive economy,” said the Minister.

Boosting Employability and Career Prospects

The Minister added that the expansion is not merely about increasing numbers but about ensuring quality training that directly translates into employment opportunities. With industries facing an acute shortage of skilled workers, this initiative bridges the gap between education and employability, while also promoting entrepreneurship among youth.

“This skill revolution is aimed at unlocking the potential of Punjab’s youth. By providing them world-class vocational training, we are giving them the tools to secure better livelihoods and contribute to the state’s economic growth,” Bains said.
