Punjab Government Strengthens Jail Security with High-Tech Infrastructure Upgrades

AI-enabled advanced system now being extended to 17 additional jails

Punjab Government Strengthens Jail Security with High-Tech Infrastructure Upgrades Latest News: Chandigarh: The Punjab Government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has embarked on a major technological overhaul of the state’s jail system to enhance security and ensure foolproof monitoring. The Jail Department is equipping prisons with cutting-edge systems, marking a significant leap toward modern, technology-driven jail management.

Jail Minister S. Laljit Singh Bhullar informed that the process of procuring ultra-modern security equipment is already underway. “The safety of Punjab’s jails has always been a top priority of the Mann Government, and this year we are making large-scale investments in technology to ensure complete vigilance,” he said.

AI-Based Surveillance and Jammers Installed

Highlighting recent progress, the Minister stated that an AI-enabled CCTV system has been successfully installed in eight central jails, capable of raising alerts in cases of wall-scaling, use of mobile phones, riots, or attempts to throw contraband over prison walls. This advanced system is now being extended to 17 additional jails.

He further revealed that T-HCBS (Tower for Harmonious Call Blocking System) jammers have already been fitted in two jails to block illegal mobile communication. Additionally, 19 X-ray baggage scanners are now operational in 13 high-sensitivity jails to strengthen entry-point security.

Expanding Security Measures

The Punjab Government is also introducing a range of modern equipment, including full-body scanners, body-worn cameras, floodlights, walkie-talkie sets, sniffer dogs, anti-riot kits, non-linear junction detectors, high-mast poles, e-carts, and wire mesh in high-security zones.

Currently, 200 body-worn cameras are in use to monitor prisoner behavior, while 295 new CCTV cameras are being installed to cover high-security barracks housing high-risk inmates.

Virtual Courtrooms to Save Time and Resources

In a bid to reduce the logistical burden of physically producing prisoners in courts, the Jail Department has significantly expanded the use of video conferencing (VC) facilities. Already, 159 VC systems are functioning across Punjab’s jails, with a proposal for 200 more systems and VC rooms under consideration.

“The introduction of advanced security technology and digital solutions not only strengthens monitoring but also ensures better safety for staff and inmates,” said Bhullar.
