Visit Punjab Just As Home Minister Visited Jammu: Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer
Punjab Flood: MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer Writes To PM Modi Seeking Special Package Latest News: Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Member of Parliament from Sangrur on September 1, wrote to PM Modi seeking a special relief package for Punjab, as it is hit by the worst floods of the past 50 years, the government said in a press release.
He has demanded an interim relief of Rs 20,000 crore immediately and a comprehensive package after completion of the assessment of the remaining damage.
Additionally, MP has also demanded that the Centre immediately release Punjab’s pending funds of 60,000 crore rupees, for which Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has already urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene immediately.
“It is now the duty of the center to help Punjab, which feeds the country,” the press release read.
Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer has stated that the country's food reserves will be negatively impacted due to floods in Punjab, as thousands of acres of farming land are underwater that too at a time when the harvesting season was at its peak.
She added that the loss of animals in the flood has negatively impacted the ancillary businesses of dairy farming and animal husbandry.
She further stated that due to continuous rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, the water level in the Ranjit Sagar Dam rose by 25 feet in the last 10 days as the Ravi River was flooded, resulting in the release of more water than it did in 1988. Consequently, around 300 villages in three districts of the Majha region have come under the grip of floods.
Similarly, due to the rising water level in Pong Dam, the release of water into the Beas River has caused floods in many villages of Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rains have raised the water level in the Bhakra Dam, severely affecting the districts located along the Sutlej river, she reasoned out.
Due to the rain that has been falling since yesterday, a high alert has been issued along the Ghaggar River. In addition, continuous rainfall is being witnessed in Punjab, which has extended into September as well, she added.
Therefore in the view of the devastation in the state, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Member of Parliament from Sangrur, in his letter addressed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he demanded a special central package for Punjab.
The package includes adequate compensation to the flood-affected families, reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, including the irrigation system, and repair of river banks.
“Along with permanent management of Ghaggar, the banks of the rivers should be strengthened to at least four and a half feet,” it added.
