
The World Wrestling Entertainment has announced that it has signed the Indian woman wrestler Kavita Devi to developmental contracts. She has become the first woman from India to receive the opportunity.
She has joined the coterie of Jinder Mahal and The Great Khali who have been part of the pro-wrestling business.
Kavita is an accomplished powerlifter who won gold while representing India at the 2016 South Asian Games. A former Kabaddi player in high school, she learned her ring skills from mentor The Great Khali.
According to WWE, Kavita is expected to begin her training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, starting January 2018.
She hit the headlines when a video of her went viral as she wearing the traditional Indian dress ‘salwar kameez’ in WWE's Mae Young Classic tournament in Dubai.
She was the part of the WWE's Mae Young classic tournament, has made history by becoming the first ever woman wrestler from India to be awarded a WWE developmental contract.
The Indian got selected after the tryouts which consisted 40 men and women from the Middle East and India with diverse backgrounds in sports and athletics, including powerlifters, rugby and football players, amateur wrestlers, martial artists and fitness experts.
According to the media reports, she revealed that the wrestling was really a tough decision for her but her brother and husband supported her a lot. Her family is the biggest strength for Kavita.
WWE champion Jinder Mahal on Kavita’s contract told media, "I'm extremely proud to welcome Kavita to WWE where she now has a great opportunity to become India's first female WWE Superstar. She is an inspiration to the youth of India and I wish nothing but success for her."
