Odisha Cyclone Montha: 8 Districts on High Alert; Check the Emergency Steps Taken by Odisha Govt Latest News: The Odisha Government has made extensive preparations across various districts of the state to effectively deal with Cyclone Montha, which is currently active over the west-central Bay of Bengal, about 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha), as of 5:30 a.m. today.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), extensive preparations have been made, particularly in the southeastern districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur.
A total of 2,048 cyclone and flood shelters have been prepared to accommodate people being moved to safer locations.
Earlier today, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi chaired a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar to review the state’s preparedness to deal with the cyclone.

The meeting was attended by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) D.K. Singh, DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, Fire Services DG Sudhanshu Sarangi, IMD Director Manorama Mohanty, and senior officials from various departments. District Collectors from cyclone-vulnerable areas also joined the meeting virtually, according to ANI.
The CMO further informed that so far, 11,396 people from eight districts have been evacuated to safe locations, and an additional 30,554 people will be relocated if necessary.
It added that 1,871 pregnant women have already been shifted to healthcare centers, and a total of 2,693 pregnant women will be relocated as needed.
A total of 30 ODRAF teams, 123 Fire Service teams, and 5 NDRF teams have been deployed in various districts of the state for rescue operations.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclonic Storm Montha has been moving north-northwestwards at a speed of 15 kmph over the past six hours as reported this morning, and the intensified severe cyclonic storm continues to move in the same direction.
The system is expected to bring strong winds with speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
The administration has prohibited tourists and residents from visiting coastal and hilly areas for the next two to three days, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
Meanwhile, schools and Anganwadi centers in eight districts will remain closed till October 30 as part of the precautionary measures taken by the state government.
“Engineering departments are on standby to ensure uninterrupted power and drinking water supply, with DG sets available as backup power sources,” the CMO’s office posted on X (formerly Twitter), originally written in Odia.

Additionally, the Agriculture Department has been directed to immediately assess crop damage after the cyclone and provide necessary assistance accordingly.
“The Odisha Government is fully prepared to tackle Cyclone Montha. As always, the state government’s goal is ‘Zero Casualty,’” Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said, according to the CMO statement.
