India, China Troops Disengagement at Depsang, Demchok Latest News: Indian and Chinese military forces are on track to finalize the disengagement process in the Depsang and Demchok regions of Ladakh by the end of this month, with soldiers returning to pre-April 2020 positions, confirmed Army sources today.
Both countries have agreed to withdraw all temporary structures, such as tents and sheds, while ground commanders will regularly meet to maintain clear communication and manage the withdrawal process.
This disengagement follows a significant patrolling agreement between India and China, marking a hopeful step in de-escalating the longstanding tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Each side will retain its surveillance capabilities in the Depsang and Demchok sectors and notify the other when conducting patrols to prevent miscommunication or unintended confrontations.
The backdrop to these tensions includes a series of standoffs in 2020, particularly the Pangong Lake skirmishes in May and the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June, which resulted in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers. In the aftermath, both countries substantially increased their military presence along the LAC, with Delhi airlifting around 70,000 troops, deploying tanks, and positioning fighter jets in eastern Ladakh as a show of readiness.
The disengagement plan now aims to reduce the military build-up along the contested border, fostering stability in one of the most sensitive areas between the two nations.
