Supreme Court on Verdict Related To Industrial Alcohol Latest News: In a landmark 8:1 majority ruling, the Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a previous seven-judge bench verdict, asserting that states hold regulatory authority over the production, manufacture, and supply of industrial alcohol. This decision significantly shifts the balance of regulatory control from the Centre to the states.
The case, which had been in legal limbo for over two decades, originally saw a seven-judge bench in 1997 rule that the Centre held the power to regulate industrial alcohol. However, in 2010, the issue was referred to a nine-judge bench for further examination.
Writing the majority judgment for himself and seven other justices, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud concluded that the Centre lacks the constitutional power to regulate industrial alcohol. "States are constitutionally empowered to legislate on matters related to industrial alcohol," the judgment emphasized, marking a pivotal legal shift.
This ruling now grants state governments the authority to regulate industrial alcohol production, significantly impacting industries reliant on the substance. Industrial alcohol, which is used in sectors ranging from manufacturing to pharmaceuticals, has been a contested issue between state and central authorities for decades.
The judgment is expected to have broad implications, as it strengthens state autonomy in regulatory matters and alters the legal framework surrounding industrial alcohol governance.
