IMD Warns of Fresh Heatwave Spell in Northern and Central India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecasted another spell of heatwave conditions in parts of northern India over the coming days, following a brief respite due to recent rainfall and cooler weather.

According to IMD predictions, temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2–3 degrees Celsius over northwest India within the next five days.

The IMD has issued yellow alerts and predicted the possibility of heatwave conditions in parts of South Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from April 22 to 24. Similar conditions could prevail in Rajasthan and Haryana from April 23 to 24, and in Vidarbha from April 21 to 23.

The department has advised vulnerable groups, especially the elderly and infants, to avoid prolonged exposure to heat.

Meanwhile, East India is also likely to witness a gradual temperature increase of 4–6 degrees Celsius over the next four days.

India recently experienced the season's first heatwave, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius in several northern states such as Punjab. On April 8, parts of Rajasthan recorded temperatures as high as 46 degrees Celsius.
