Centre To Introduce Bill For The Restoration Of Statehood To Jammu And Kashmir Latest News: The Centre, according to multiple reports, is going to introduce a bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday seeking to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, which is now a Union Territory (UT).
In a first, the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories in 2019 into the UT of Jammu and Kashmir with legislative power and the UT of Ladakh without one. It was the first time a state was downgraded to a Union Territory in the history of India.
The Government of India, on August 5, 2019, abrogated Articles 370 and 35A, which had granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir since 1949.
Removal of the special status from the erstwhile state was announced by Home Minister Amit Shah in the parliament that year.
UT of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on August 7, in a letter to all national parties, including BJP, called for a bill to be introduced in the ongoing monsoon Parliament session to restore statehood.
The Supreme Court had given the Centre eight weeks to respond to a petition filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, an academician seeking the restoration of Statehood.
Meanwhile, the centre will also introduce a landmark Constitution amendment Bill for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and state ministers if arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days for any offence punishable with five years imprisonment or more, the Tribune reported.
