RG Kar Rape and Murder Case Verdict Latest News Today: The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court sentenced Sanjay Roy, the accused in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, to life imprisonment on Monday. Alongside the sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Roy.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which led the investigation, had sought capital punishment for the accused. During the sentencing, the court addressed Roy, stating, "The charges against you have been proven."
Accused Claims Innocence
Sanjay Roy maintained his innocence throughout the trial, alleging he was "falsely implicated." Speaking in court, Roy said, "I have not done anything—neither rape nor murder. I am innocent and was tortured into signing documents."
Defense and Prosecution Arguments
Roy’s lawyer argued against the death penalty, emphasizing the possibility of reformation. "Even in rarest of rare cases, there should be a scope for rehabilitation. The prosecution must prove why the accused is beyond reform," the defense stated.
On the other hand, the victim’s family and their lawyer demanded the death penalty. "We want the maximum punishment," said the victim's father, vowing to continue their fight for justice both in court and on the streets.
Chief Minister’s Statement
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her government's commitment to justice in the case. "We cooperated fully with the investigation. Although the judiciary took its time, we always wanted the victim to get justice," Banerjee said.
Background of the Case
The case pertains to the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her body was discovered on August 9, 2024, in the hospital's seminar room. The incident triggered widespread outrage and protests across West Bengal.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested shortly after the incident. On Saturday, the court found him guilty under sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of the Bengal Penal Code.
The court noted, "The accused entered the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College, assaulted, and murdered the victim while she was resting."
Public Reaction
The verdict has elicited mixed reactions, with many welcoming the life imprisonment sentence as a step toward justice, while others, including the victim’s family, believe the punishment should have been harsher.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent measures to ensure the safety of women and accountability for such heinous crimes.
