76-year-old Retired Govt Doctor Dies After Scammers Harassed Her, Mamidipudi Nagarjuna, Latest News: A 76-year-old retired government doctor died of a heart attack after being repeatedly harassed by fraudsters posing as law enforcement officers, Zee News reported.
According to the report, the fraudsters extorted Rs 6.6 lakh from her in just three days. In a shocking turn of events, the scammers continued sending threats even after her death.
The retired doctor, from Mamidipudi Nagarjuna Area Hospital in Malakpet, received WhatsApp video calls from the fraudsters on September 5.
The scammers used the Bengaluru Police logo as their profile picture and began targeting her with forged documents carrying fake seals of the Supreme Court, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the RBI, according to the report.
They even falsely accused the elderly woman of involvement in human trafficking. The fraudsters warned that if she failed to pay, she would be arrested under the National Security Act (NSA).
She transferred over Rs 6 lakh to their bank account, which was linked to a shell entity in Maharashtra, the report said.
Even after the transaction, the woman continued receiving calls from different numbers, with fake court notices and continuous video call threats.
She passed away around 12:30 pm on September 8, after suffering severe chest pain following days of harassment. She reportedly collapsed at her home and was rushed to a nursing home, then shifted to Apollo Spectra Clinic, where she died around 12:30 pm.
A case has been registered by Hyderabad Cybercrime Police under the IT Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Investigations are underway.
