9-Year-Old Girl in Rajasthan Dies, Suspected Heart Attack Latest News
Sikar, Rajasthan – Prachi Kumawat, a 9-year-old Class 4 student from Danta town in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, is suspected to have died of a heart attack on Tuesday morning.
According to a report by NDTV, the incident occurred when Prachi was opening her lunchbox at school and suddenly collapsed. Teachers rushed her to the nearest community health centre, where doctors made efforts to revive her. However, she had no pulse, her blood pressure had dropped, and she was breathless—symptoms indicative of cardiac arrest.
She was then referred to a larger hospital in Sikar but could not be revived.
School principal Nand Kishore Tiwari of Adarsh Vidya Mandir said the child had been absent for two to three days due to a slight cold. However, she returned to school on Monday and appeared to be in good health, even participating in the morning prayer and assembly.
Dr. Subhash Verma, who treated Prachi at the community health centre in Danta, told NDTV, “The school staff and teachers brought the nine-year-old girl to us. She was unconscious, gasping, and having difficulty breathing. There was no blood pressure or pulse, and her heart was not beating. We started CPR, administered oxygen, emergency drugs, and IV fluids.”
Despite all efforts, her condition did not improve, prompting the doctors to call an ambulance and refer her to the district hospital.
Dr. Verma added, “Sudden cardiac arrest in children is rare. It may result from congenital heart disease or electrical disturbances in the heart, which often go unnoticed. Such cases should be properly investigated.”
The family, however, declined to conduct an autopsy, making it difficult to confirm the exact cause of death.
Dr. R.K. Jangid, another doctor involved in her treatment, said, “Prima facie, it appeared to be a heart attack. She initially responded to CPR, oxygen, and emergency drugs, which is why we sent her to the district hospital. But the cause of death cannot be definitively stated without a postmortem.”
This case adds to a small but concerning number of similar incidents in recent months. In January, an eight-year-old Class 3 student in Chamarajanagar, Karnataka, reportedly died of a cardiac arrest after collapsing while handing over a notebook to a teacher. That same month, another 8-year-old girl in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, collapsed in the school lobby and was declared dead due to cardiac arrest.
Though rare, children can suffer cardiac arrests. Firstpost cited Dr. Vittal Kumar Kesireddy, Senior Paediatrician at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad, saying, “Sudden cardiac arrest in children, though rare, can occur due to undiagnosed underlying heart conditions such as congenital heart defects, arrhythmias, or genetic disorders like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.”
