The report emphasizes that the fast-paced advancement of technology and the resulting shifts in the job market have pushed both industries and students to seek new academic courses that integrate creative disciplines with traditional subjects.

India is no exception to this trend, witnessing a surge in design education as institutions introduce new programs to meet evolving demands.

IIT Delhi has launched a new four-year undergraduate program, BTech in Design, starting from the academic year 2025-26. Similarly, Mahindra University’s School of Design Innovation now offers B.Des, M.Des, and Ph.D. programs. These focus on design thinking, innovation, and specializations like industrial, communication, interaction, and apparel design.

Prof. B. K. Chakravarthy, Founding Dean of Mahindra University’s School of Design Innovation, speaking on the importance of design innovation, he said, “The core objective of design innovation is an effective problem-solving method that blends creativity with strategic acumen. A user-friendly interface in software is as vital as the technology behind it, and ease of use enhances its market potential.”

The World University of Design (WUD) has launched new UG and PG programs for 2025–26, including a B.Tech in Computer Science & Design, focused on AI’s growing impact, and a Master’s in Game Design & Development for students from non-gaming backgrounds.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vice-Chancellor of WUD, said, “Our new programs are crafted to bridge the gap between technology, business, and the arts. We aim to ensure our graduates are industry-ready and equipped to lead innovation.”

Anil Pokhriyal, CEO of the Management & Entrepreneurship and Professional Skills Council (MEPSC), stated, “Our approach to skilling must evolve with a greater emphasis on real-world problem-solving. We aim to build future-ready design professionals by integrating skills like design thinking, visual communication, and entrepreneurial mindset into our programs,” ANI quoted him.

As industries evolve with technology, blending creativity with core skills is becoming essential. The surge in design-focused programs and internships reflects a future driven by innovation and adaptability.
