The flagship indigenous train was flagged by PM Modi from New Delhi yesterday

New Delhi, 16th Feb: The much celebrated ‘Vande Bharat express’ touted to be the fastest train of India, and launched yesterday from New Delhi by the PM himself with much fanfare, has had a rather disgraceful run on its return trip from Varanasi to New Delhi on Saturday morning. It is India’s first engine less train, which has been designed to run at the top speed of 180 km per hour. It is expected to start its commercial run from tomorrow. On its way to Delhi, the train broke down almost 200 km away from the national capital.

After the power supply went off at around 5am today in some coaches, the train came to a halt at Chamrola station. It had reached a dragging speed of 10 km per hour before reaching there. The staff has called the failure as “mechanical fault in the braking system”. A foul smell and some smoke had also emanated from the train, along with thumping noises, when the train was made to run at an increased speed.

The Railways Ministry has attributed the failure to a possible cattle run over, however, there were no such visible signs of damage on the body of the train. It is notable that the train had all the safety clearances, and had gone through all the tests and trials.
