The 2001 Parliament attack is remembered as one of the most audacious terror strikes in India’s history. On December 13, 2001, five armed terrorists, linked to the Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), stormed the Parliament complex in New Delhi. The attack took place during a session of Parliament, with several high-ranking leaders, including then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and opposition leader Sonia Gandhi, present inside.

Thanks to the swift response of the security forces, the attackers were neutralized before they could breach the main chambers. However, the assault claimed the lives of nine individuals, including five Delhi Police personnel, a Parliament Security Service staff member, and a gardener, while leaving several others injured. The incident exposed significant security vulnerabilities and underscored the threat of terrorism in India.

In the aftermath of the attack, India ramped up its counter-terrorism measures and intensified diplomatic efforts to hold those responsible accountable. The attack led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, bringing the two nations to the brink of war.

Today, as the nation remembers the martyrs of this tragic event, PM Modi's homage serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who put their lives on the line to protect the country’s democratic institutions. Commemorative ceremonies were also held at the Parliament House, attended by leaders across the political spectrum, who offered floral tributes to the memorial of the fallen heroes.

The Parliament attack continues to inspire efforts to safeguard the nation against terror threats and honor the courage of those who stand in harm’s way to defend India’s sovereignty.
