NEW-DELHI: The Promotion of 67 judges of Gujarat, including Justice Harish Hasmukhbhai Verma, who sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in the Modi surname defamation case has been challenged in the Supreme Court. A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice MR Shah will hear the petition challenging the promotion on May 8.

The Gujarat government has promoted these 68 judges on the basis of 65 percent quota system. After this, these judges have been posted at new places. All these promoted judges are currently undergoing training at the Gujarat Judicial Academy. Meanwhile, this promotion has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The Promotion of 68 judges of Gujarat has been challenged by two judicial officers of the senior civil judge cadre, Ravi Kumar Mehta and Sachin Mehta. In their petition, they have demanded cancellation of the promotion list issued by the Gujarat High Court on March 10 and cancellation of the appointment notification issued by the Gujarat government. The petition demanded that the Gujarat High Court prepare a fresh list of judicial officers on the basis of merit and seniority.
