Supreme Court on Farmers' Protest at Shambhu Border Latest News Today: On Monday, September 2, the Supreme Court ordered the formation of a High-Powered Committee to engage in negotiations with the farmers protesting at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana.
The committee will be led by Justice Nawab Singh, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
This decision was made by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan in response to a petition filed by the State of Haryana. The petition sought to challenge an order by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which called for the removal of the blockade at the Shambhu border. The blockade had been set up by Haryana to prevent the protesters from marching to Delhi.
The Supreme Court bench encouraged the Committee to communicate with the protesting farmers, requesting them to remove their tractors, trolleys, and other equipment from the Shambhu border on the National Highway to alleviate the inconvenience faced by the general public. The protesters are free to relocate their demonstration to an alternative site designated by the authorities.
The bench also advised the farmers to remain independent of political parties, stressing that the protest should not be politicized. The bench acknowledged the significant presence of marginalized agricultural communities in Punjab and Haryana, who live below the poverty line and deserve compassion. Consequently, the bench decided that a neutral committee was necessary to address their concerns.
The committee members include:
- Justice Nawab Singh, Former Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court;
- PS Sandhu, Retired IPS Officer, Former DG of Haryana;
- Devender Sharma, Professor of Eminence at GNCT Amritsar;
- Dr. Sukhpal Singh, Agricultural Economist from Punjab Agriculture University.
