Himachal Pradesh: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 3 Districts; Monsoon Likely to Reach State Within 2 Days
Monsoon Punjab 2025 latest updates: Shimla, June 20 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, has issued a Yellow Alert for four districts of Punjab for June 19, warning of heavy rain.
The districts under the Yellow Alert include Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur.
Nowcast warnings valid up to 7 PM today:
IMD Shimla has issued Yellow Alerts for most regions of the state, with the exception of Kaza and Pooh in Eastern Himachal. For most parts of the region, IMD Shimla has warned of light rain, thunderstorms, and surface winds, as per its latest update.
For June 21, the State Meteorological Department has extended Yellow Alerts to six western districts — Kangra, Hamirpur, Una, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur.
Rainfall in the past 24 hours (Himachal Pradesh):
In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall of 54.0 mm was recorded in Kangra district, while the lowest, 0.1 mm, was observed in Sundernagar.
The statewide average rainfall during this period was 12.3 mm, which is 39% below normal, as the normal for this time is 20.3 mm, according to the IMD report.
However, from June 1 to June 20, 2025, the total rainfall has been 132.7 mm, which is 15% below normal for this time (expected normal: 156.5 mm).
Districts without rainfall: Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur
The IMD has forecast that Himachal Pradesh will receive light to moderate rainfall at some places on June 20, while from June 21 to June 24, there is a possibility of light to moderate rainfall in many districts across the state.
Forecast for the coming week:
Between June 20 and June 24, 2025, rainfall is likely in the districts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, and Una, while Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur are expected to remain mostly dry. The weather during this period will generally be cloudy, with chances of thunder and lightning, and temperatures are expected to stay normal to slightly above normal.
The anticipated rainfall in some districts may help improve soil moisture, which would be beneficial for the sowing of crops like maize and paddy.
Rainfall in the state on June 20, 2025 (between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM):
On June 20, 2025, between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM, Kangra recorded the highest rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, receiving 54.0 mm of rain. Other stations including Shimla (11.0 mm), Sundernagar (0.1 mm), and Shimla Airport (5.0 mm) also reported rainfall during the same period.
Bhuntar and Kalpa recorded no rainfall, while Shimla and Shimla Airport continued to receive moderate showers throughout the day.
Further Advancement of Southwest Monsoon:
The southwest monsoon has further advanced into most parts of Uttarakhand, many parts of Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Ladakh.
Conditions are also becoming favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon over the remaining parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, and some more parts of Ladakh during the next two days.
