A yellow alert has been issued by IMD for heatwave conditions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Heatwave Hits Chandigarh in the second Week of April, Latest News: Summer is yet to officially begin, but Chandigarh is already bracing for its first heatwave of the season this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a record number of heatwaves this summer.
A yellow alert has been issued by IMD for heatwave conditions on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. According to the advisory for Chandigarh, temperatures are expected to cross the 40°C mark nearly two weeks earlier than they did last year.
IMD Chandigarh attributes the rising temperatures to clear skies and hot, dry winds being pushed into the region by an anti-cyclonic movement over Rajasthan.
“There hasn’t been an active Western Disturbance (WD) directly affecting the region, which typically helps keep temperatures in check,” said Surender Paul, Director of IMD Chandigarh.
Paul also stated that, as per the IMD’s long-range forecast using probability models, both daytime and nighttime temperatures are expected to remain above normal due to global climatic factors.
A heatwave, in this region, is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 40°C and remains 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal. A severe heatwave is declared when the deviation exceeds 6.5°C.
On Sunday, the maximum temperature rose from 34.8°C on Saturday to 37.4°C, which is 4.4°C above normal — the highest recorded so far this year.
The minimum temperature dipped slightly from 18.8°C on Saturday to 18.1°C on Sunday, which is 0.6°C below normal.
Offering some relief, the IMD has forecast a possibility of rain towards the weekend, due to an approaching Western Disturbance, expected to affect the region starting Thursday, potentially leading to rain on Friday. However, temperatures are likely to rise again after this brief break.
